License details

The MailWasher Server Open Source is released under both the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPL v2) and a variation of the Mozilla Public License 1.1 (Firetrust Public License - FPL).

General Public License - GPL

Firetrust Public License - FPL

LICENSE FAQ's

1) What is the variation to the Mozilla Public License?

The Mozilla license modifications relate to the following:

All copies of the Covered Code must include on each user interface screen:

  1. the "powered by Firetrust" logo and
  2. the Firetrust copyright notice

in the same form as they appear in the distribution. See Exhibit B of the FPL for more details.

2) Why are you using a dual license?

Dual licensing of the MailWasher Server source code provides open and free access to the technology both for the GPL community and for other developers or companies that cannot use the GPL. Having our code licensed under GPL makes it possible for users to use it alongside or combine it with other GPL licensed code and therefore further the copyleft principles that are intrinsic to these licenses. Having our code licensed uder the FPL enables users to use our code in combination with or alongside code that is licensed under another license (even proprietary code) as long as one respects the license conditions of the FPL (most importantly, that all original or changed source code that has been obtained under the FPL needs to be made available upon (re-)distribution.) We feel that there are a number of situations where the combination of open-source code with proprietary code is useful and/or necessary, and by licensing our code under the FPL, we want to make such use possible. Through the combined use of GPL and FPL, developers will have a high degree of freedom yet compatibility and interoperability will be preserved.

3) If I contribute to this project what do I have to do about licensing?

All contributions to the source code will require that the code is automatically available under both the GPL and the FPL. Firetrust asks that developers fill out the Contributor Agreement so that the copyright is unified. The Contributors Agreement ensures that Firetrust can defend license violations if necessary. You only need to fill out the Contributor Agreement once.

4) How can I use this licensed code?

All code licensed under this model can be used and distributed by anyone as long as they follow the conditions of one of the two licenses. This means that to use the code, the user needs to pick one of the licenses and act according to this one license only (e.g. the user can choose to use the code according to the Conditions of the FPL or the conditions of the GPL according to whatever best fits their situation/needs). The 'dual license' approach does not mean that users can combine parts of the two licenses.

MailWasher Server blocked over 98% of my spam with hardly any (less than 0.1%) false positives! This excellent software makes using the Internet and email productive again. Simple to use and set-up, yet incredibly powerful in its application. I'm happy to recommend this product to anyone that doesn't want to waste time with spam."

Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to purchase a license right away and will purchase however many needed based on the licensing agreement.
I do think you have a winner with this product. Even though I have a very technical background, I couldn't believe how easy this product was to configure. Nice work and thanks again for the speedy response.

I must say that I'm quite impressed with MailWasher Server. I've deployed it at one of our clients and it works wonderfully. I had to do a little jiggering around to make the junk mail reporting work properly with Exchange, but it wasn't that tough to do overall. I'm definitely excited about what I've read on the support forums, indicating that MailWasher Server will be able to integrate into Active Directory and use the existing user accounts, and even have a "This message is Spam" button in Outlook to handle reporting in an Exchange environment. (All of our clients use Exchange, really. We manage a large quantity of ten to one hundred seat networks in an outsourced IT management capacity). I've tested a decent number of anti-spam gateway products in the past, and honestly I just haven't been satisfied with them. They are either inaccurate, hard to use, hard to set up, or worse. Thanks for making this great product available.

Hi all, after a large amount of spam technology reviewing i decided to go with Mail Washer OSS. Installtion was a snap ( apart from McAfee AV kicking out the Mail Washer process. Remedied under "access protection properties" by adding the two Mail Washer processes to be allowed by the way ). It's working really well and little or no spam is getting through. With such complicated spam solutions out there ranging from hardware to software options, I was delighted that Mail Washer "did what it said on the can"!!!

Hi! I just started using Mailwasher Server and I am very surprised about the quality. Please keep up the good work.

Barracuda has two main drawbacks as far as we can see. It doesn't detect anywhere near as much spam as your system does and it is all web-based so that, once per day, each email user will get an email letting them know that there is spam in their Barracuda inbox.

Hi there. I've downloaded your server version of MailWasher and it looks great. I've installed it on our church's server and people have noticed the difference already.
