Automatic program updates

Saturday 14th of March 2009 1:40am

When a new version/update of MWP comes out, that it will automatically delete the old version and install straight over the top of it.

As this is the default behavior for REGULAR MWP (not the Beta) already, I don't see any need to do anything else. The Beta (at least until it gets to be fully functional) NEEDS to install separately so it still allows the last fully functional version (v6.3 in this case) to still work. And the same will be true in the future whenever new versions of MWP are released that start from as embryonic a position as did this one.

QuietOne, isn't the suggestion that MailWasher Pro update in the same way as Firefox and Thunderbird update when a new version comes out, i.e. MailWasher does the download (presumably just getting a "small" update file) and then automatically updates itself to the new version.

I can't tell if you're right or not but that's not the way I understood it. And since "Anonymous" made the suggestion maybe you should ask him/her what THEY meant instead of asking me.

Okay, I'll ask. Can there be an option to check for updates? I think that is the spirit of the question. I don't see one under tools or help. Personally, I don't want automatic updates, but just the option to see if a new version is available would be good.

If this suggestion is to work similar to Firefox etc. then I'd also support it. i.e.:-
(1) Have an option (checkbox) for "Automatically check for updates".
(2) Have further options if the first option is selected under a title of "When updates to MailWasher are found:" with options for "Ask me what I want to do" and "Automatically download and install the update".
(3) Have a user-selectable menu item (Help Menu?) for "Check for Updates".

Yeah I read this as just "Will the program auto update?" Yes I agree unless there is of course a major change that may interfere with any personalised settings.

I vote yes for the automatic updates, not sure how QuiteOne could interpret it to be anything else.

I'm with Beermatt on this but maybe we could have a 'your version is no longer supported' marker as well?

Yes to inform on new update (see my suggestion) but PLEASE NO automatic update.

I am not receiving automated updates at all. I updated subscription for another year, but neither a link to the update site or the license number was provided. This option should be handled much much easier. Why not?

I think Beermatt's expanding on the exact meaning of "Automatic Updates" is the correct way to go. I've been using MWP since V.3, and have gone entire years without realizing I need to check for an update. Even tho I think Beermatt's comprehensive approach is best, a simple menu item under "Help"--i.e. "Check for updates..."-- like pretty much every other recent program I've ever used has, would at least be useful, and save having to constantly dig around the website looking to see if I have the latest version. Still, my vote is for Beermatt's approach.

I agree that Firetrust should make their program 1) notify paid customers if there is an upgrade available (popup window or message somewhere in the program user interface) 2) give us the option of a) download and install or b) remind me later in X days, and then 3) download and install at the click of a button. Thanks!

I would abhor an automatic install of an update; I've had several regular updates go bad on me in the past.

In addition, automatic updates tend to kick in at very inappropriate times, such as when I need to finish a project or need to shutdown. The Foxfire example above would be sufficient.

+1 for Beermatt's treatment: automatically identify when new updates are available, with changeable settings that dicate what MWP does with the information.

I think this one would be awesome, but it would need to leave our settings and filters without changing them. Once I get all of my accounts, settings and filters set up, it would really be tough if it automatically overwrote them.

Most all of the software I has auto updates and I have no idea why it don't do it already.
