Does this work on Macs? Apple computers?

Submitted by chris on Thu, 2007-12-13 02:26.

Hi Tamara

No, though if run any virtualisation software such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Mac then you can run any Windows application you like under that environment on your Mac.

Just downloaded and install 6.1. I'm getting the 'index out of bounds' error. And, I'm getting a list error, but it also says it's not my fault.

Help!!!!!

Anyone else have a problem with the program running/displaying slowly? I noticed this problem at 5.1. When minimizing or maximizing from the tray icon, program will take approx. 4 - 5 seconds to fully display, and 3 seconds to shrink to the tray. The problem gets worse with each new version. Have this issue on a new PC.

Under Settings >> Recycle Bin Options >> try clearing the Message Logs and empty the Recycle Bin.

This will mean that any message deleted will not be able to be restored however, so only do this if you are sure you will not be needing to restore a message previously deleted.

Yes, I'm noticing the slow display problem. This on version 6.1, which I just upgraded to. I didn't notice it on the version 5.3? I was using.

The problem is the "advanced text service" (translated from Dutch)
when you disable this function the speed of MWP is increasing :-)
You can find this option here:
Configuration > Countrysettings (I do not know the right translation...) > Tab Languages > Button Details > Tab advanced >
Disable (uncheck) "advanced text services"
Now the problem is gone :-)

I notice the "Check Mail" drop-down list (the little down-arrow next to the 'Check Mail' button (so you can check an individual account)) puts the drop-down menu to the LEFT of the button, and outside the MailWasher 6.1 form. Previously (version 5.3) it would display it correctly below the drop-down arrow / button.

If I move the MW form all the way to the left of my windows desktop so left side of MW is left side of windows desktop, the drop-down menu displays properly.

MailWasher is SLOOOOoowwww. I've noticed it too, it's just an overall slowness. It seems to be getting worse. Yes, I've cleared my message log an the recycle bin. The bin is set for only one day of retention. I love this program, but could you make it a little quicker?

Submitted by nick on Thu, 2007-12-20 08:56.

Thanks for the comments on the sloooowwwnes of Mailwasher when minimizing/maximizing. We'll take a look at this and fix it up. And thanks for the bug report on the drop down account list - duly noted.

Submitted by Bubbi (not verified) on Thu, 2007-12-20 20:06.

Thanks for acknwledging the drop-down accounts list bug.

This one probably is not a bug, but it's a bit annoying. When closing the application MW6.1 there seems to be a flash of a thermometer form.

It's so fast I have no idea what it is for, perhaps purging a file or something. But the point being, it is really distracting. I'll loose basically any feature need be if I can turn if off. Or better yet, I don't see the point in it.

I do have a fast machine, but how usefull is that theremo bar? Does it also makes MW appear to react sluggishly. I know of know other programs that bring up a dialog when exiting. Perhaps you guys can shut that down.

Thanks
Bubbi

Submitted by nick on Thu, 2007-12-20 21:10.

That flash of a progress bar is Mailwasher shutting down the various threads and processes it runs. Users actually asked us to include something like that in there because they would find that MailWasher looked like it stopped responding, so they wanted a visual indicator. Could we make it different or more informative so it's less annoying?

Submitted by Bubbi (not verified) on Thu, 2007-12-20 23:08.

How about an option checkbox to turn it off... it happens fast enough that I have no idea what it's for, but slow enough to be distracting. It could default to on, so your default users would see it.

[x] No Visual App Closing display

Better from a programming point of view with be to set the main window to visible = .f. && False so it looks like mailwasher shuts down really snappy, and then it can close all its processes with no visual indication, and the user wont be waiting for anything.

Bubbi

PS: You guys are really responsive... thanks! :-)

Do you have a CD for this program that I can buy? I'm now using my laptop and tried twice to download the program but had absolutely no success! It's not the program's fault - it's something with the laptop because I have had the same problem with another program I attempted to download! I LOVE MailWasher Pro!

Sorry for the late reply here. Hopefully you've managed to download it now, we don't really offer a CD, but if you're really desperate send me an email nick.bolton@firetrust.com and we'll send you one.

Newer version check

Would it be possible to add an option to mailwasher pro to check for a newer version every [x]. Where [x] could be every week, month, year, when i'me on-line

If a newer version is available, display a message to user something like "A newer version of mailwasher pro is currently available, would you like to upgrade?" [yes] [no] [what's new]

Yes=Takes you to download page
No=Cancels message
What's new=takes you to change log page

Submitted by admin on Sun, 2008-01-06 22:10.

Yes its possible - anything is :)

So, we'll add it to our list of things to do. We'd thought previously about doing this on a more advanced level, auto update type of thing but there's a few issues involved so your suggestion is a nicer way to go.

Thanks

I had Mailwasher, sitehound, benign etc on this computer but the system crashed and I have lost all the programmes. I believe you have records of my contacts and maybe recent e-mails. How do I get all the programmes and all the data back please?

Submitted by admin on Sun, 2008-01-06 22:13.

Sorry you lost everything! Alas, we do not have records of your details (emails, contacts etc) at all (only your purchases, so if you contact support@firetrust.com we'll resend your registration keys). Next time, I'd invest in a automatic backup system, there's plenty available. A nice solution would be something like http://www.idrive.com which backsup data to a remote location.

Better is to create a copy of the records from the registry (export), all account settings are under:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FireTrust\MailWasher Pro\Prefs\accounts]

You will get a *.reg file. To "restore" your accounts, you must only double clik this file and they will be loaded in MailWasher. This is one step.

The second step involves the data files from MailWasher, which are stored under "\Document and Settings\User Name\Application Data\MailWasherPro", these include the filters, logs and blacklist. You can simply make a copy of it as a backup (note that this set of files changes EACH time you run MailWasher

You must do the same for each Windows user account with MailWasher access that you have in the machine.

To save screwing in the registry, a user wrote a small utility that does the same thing

I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not but since I was reading through these messages I figured I'd let you know that I'm using Object Desktop to theme my windows with many different types of skins and themes and I don't have any problem with 6.0 themes skinning MWP at all. Not sure if that's the type of thing you meant but if it is maybe you need to see if you have 'per application' settings going on there or something? I'm about to upgrade to 6.1 so I'll check again after I upgrade but looking at it right now this minute on 6.0 it's working for me.

It does not work with Japanese well.
Especially, It does not detect Regular Expression.
At least, I need to change FONTS, so I can read them.

Also, I would like to have BOUNCE MAIL option in Recycle Bin
instead of only RESTORE MAIL option, or they will know
the account exists. So, they will send me other mail with
different addresses unless I bounce their first mail.

Thank you.

Submitted by admin on Sun, 2008-01-06 22:58.

Thanks for letting us know about the Japanese readability problems. We're looking to make enhancements to the internationalization of MailWasher quite soon.

We probably can't add the bounce functionality in to the recycle bin, as it's a recycle bin and prefer to keep that kind of functionality there.

I'm running Windows XP ... Instead of loading, it causes my machine to shut down and reboot. Sometimes, it does it if it is the first program opened and sometimes not... Sometimes, it shuts down when I have Paint Shop Pro 9 opened so there isn't any specific thing that I can see causing it other than it is only when I open Mailwasher.
Can I update? I have purchase Mailwasher 5

You're probably right there, after 5 we added learning capabilities and this is probably the reason it's a bit slower. I guess we haven't really noticed at all as we tend to upgrade our computers fairly regularly. We'll work on some optimizations to it.

Submitted by admin on Tue, 2008-01-08 00:03.

The password its asking for (most probably) is your email account password, something only you can get access to. If you've recently changed it or mistakenly altered it then you'll need to re-enter the correct one. It would be a good idea to check with your internet provider to confirm your password.

'Regularly' my server times out\can't be reached - as I check 25 accounts sequentially (as recommended in your settings....), I have to click 50 times 'OK' in a row once something goes wrong, which is rather strenuous - is there a way to close the whole session in one go? Or to disable the stupid pop up windows? Let me know there are errors, but don't show me the account details as I know they are correct - they worked well minutes before.....

Submitted by admin on Tue, 2008-01-08 23:36.

Hi Trois, if you type CTRL + E, the error digest will appear. Click on 'Options' button and then tick the box 'Suppress all errors' and this will just leave a small yellow triangle in the status bar when something goes wrong. You can click on the triangle and it will show the error digest.

There's no real way of suppressing errors like wrong password all together though if you also mean that.

Hi Nick, Thanks - ticked that box - now I just have to wait and see (when it goes wrong again). It's not a matter of my passwords being incorrect, as I saved them and everything works fine 97% of the time - it "looks" like that though, the moment no connection with the mailserver can be established - but it is a technical failure (the line or server not being 'available'), not an account-issue. Hiya,

I too have had this problem for quite some time, if the internet is being used by some other applications and many times when this is the only application being used it just has trouble connecting to the mail servers quite often. Lately I've been playing an offline game called Titan Quest, while I play that I've just gotten in the habit of turning off MWP and my email program because for some reason MWP cannot connect to my mailservers at all while I'm playing this game, and the game isn't even an online game hehe.

No idea why it does this but I too have had this problem for a long time, just never worried much about it since I figured it was just a congestion of the server till this happened with the game and now seeing this other persons thread that they too have the connection problem.

Please Help? Regards Ian.

Submitted by admin on Thu, 2008-01-10 00:02.

Hi Ian, tricky one, but it's usually related to either firewall settings or your antivirus also trying to scan your email. Can you check to see if your antivirus scanner is also trying to scan email as MailWasher displays your email? There's only a need for your antivirus to scan when email is downloaded to your email client, not when Mailwasher displays it, as it is only displayed in plain text.

Hi Barrie, So you mean the 'learning' column? There was never a column named 'spam'. We replaced the learning column in version 6.0 with the 'Action' column which still does the same thing but is more friendly to use as many people didn't understand how to use the learning column. The learning column was to the far left by default.

Did you have this problem before the new version ?  If not, then it sounds like your Firewall might be causing problems and preventing the new version internet access.

Yes, or see the reply I did above for the same problem: it's usually related to either firewall settings or your antivirus also trying to scan your email. List Index Out of Bounds (0) error
I started to have a problem loading Mailwasher so I uninstalled it and installed version 6.1. But the problem persists.

When I want to start the program I get an error window "List index out of bounds (0)" and I must click OK. Then Mailwasher is running in the background, but I don't have the icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen, and I can't access Mailwasher. To stop it I have to "end process" in task manager.

Since I sent this report to support@firetrust I've discovered the -restore option, but that doesn't work either. Can you guide me to the relevant registry entries so that I can delete manually?

Nick, We have had mailwasher for many years and have told all of our friends about it. I have loved it until recently.
We have certain criteria set to automatically delete smut words, spam etc. ... all has worked fine until the past few months - just now I tried to reinstate a mistaken bounce and it would not load - kept trying to send it back as a bounce - also to complicate things these 'spam' emails do not return/bounce as we get an alert of potential worm activity detected ...
Here is what the pop-up error says: the last few sent emails contained similar subject or body content.
Sent to: {our email addy}
Subject: Returned Mail: user unknown
Message: The original messages were received at {day} {date} {time}
from: {our server}
says the following address has permanent fatal errors
Mail. local: unknown user name: error 550 {my email} user unknown.
We have done nothing different, no settings changed, no email change, all the same. We contacted our server as it said we may have potential worm activity and have updated and scanned all of our files many times - there is no problem of virus or worms.
What in the heck do you think we need to do?
Also how can I get this important email to restore?
Never had one not restore before today.
Thank you for your speedy response to this on going problem.

I'm having the same problem. It happens after two days of mail washer being active without reboot. Almost seems like a memory leak in the program.

I've had this problem for over a year and have emailed MW many times without any resolution. Their typical response is "Here install our latest version" but we haven't fixed the problem yet.

Does this company have a QA department? They should have caught this by now.

I have just installed Mailwasher Pro 6.1 (from 6.0) and so far it is working well - no problems. However, I was unaware of the existence of 6.1 until I checked the web site. Usually an email is sent to existing customers when there is a new release? Some kind of built in check for a new version would be nice.

A request for a small enhancement: I use four different email accounts, through different ISPs, and I delete known spam automatically, so it doesn't show and gets dumped straight into the recycle bin. It would be nice to have an optional "To" column on the Recycle Bin screen, so I could see at a glance which account/ISP a deleted item had come through without having to restore the message. It would then be easier to set up a filter back at the server, to help prevent such items from even getting as far as Mailwasher in future.

Thanks again for a great product and support service.

Hi Michael

I think some of the newsletters still may be going out, rather than dump them all out at once we send them progressively over time.

You may want to also check your newsletter subscriptions that you have with us, you can do that here http://firetrust.com/ft-user

And yes, adding a 'To' or 'Account' column to the Recycle Bin is on the list of adjustments we wish to make.

I came to this forum intending to ask for the same thing as Michael, and found that he had beaten me to it! Please may I second his request. I have some email addresses that are so clogged up with spam that I am going to stop using them, but until I do, it is easier to check the list of deleted mail for the very occasional genuine message than it is to check through the spam before it gets deleted. I am not worried about whether the genuine message restores correctly because I can always ask the sender to resend the message.

I appreciate the free upgrades. Not everyone offers such good value.

I'm still on version 5.3. To get to 6.1 can I upgrade in one step or do I need to go to 6.0 first?

Hi Victor

Yes the upgrade is just one install, and you do not need 6.0 first.

Thanks

Hello Nick or whoever is reading this as part of the support group. I was one of the original batch of people who tried Mailwasher as a free program but was impressed enough to make a donation to Nick because the program was excellent . I am currently running a dual boot sys with XP as a primary and Ubuntu as a backup sys . With the latest version of 6.1 ala XP I cannot bounce e-mails. I get the pop up that says " you cannot bounce this email" "Bouncing has been disabled in the options account"

Help...

Submitted by chris on Fri, 2008-02-01 00:16.

Under Settings >> Bouncing and Outgoing Mail >> you will see the option there to enable or disable

When will you have the 6.1 in german language avail for download?

I have downloaded MW Pro 6.1 (twice). PC sends me the message
"Session encountered errors. No such host. Ensure that Pop3 server
is correct"
My mail is checked every minute but no mail shows.
The "drop-down" from the e-mail button is grey/dead.
I use Windows XP.
Any ideas would be appreciated

Usually this would either be a Firewall blocking MailWasher's access, or the POP3 server address you have entered into MailWasher is incorrect.

slowness and errors,

I too use MW since the free version with great satisfaction. I too am somewhat afflicted by the slowness and also some errors. But I'm above all "afflicted" by spamming.
Zo this morning I did a little work: cleaning the blacklist/friendlist in Word.
Since spammers are very creative in domain names, I replaced all addresses by *@domain.ext (except for public providers like Yahoo, wanadoo, Aol etc) and deleted duplicates; idem for the friend list. Result: the Blacklist.txt is now reduced from 49k to 12k and MW goes much faster. (I'm testing but it seems to work)

That's why I'll be glad to have a option in the settings to add spam autom. as "add domain to Blacklist" (not the sender).

Another constation is that some of my good friends where in the blacklist. I suppose I made some mistake in the Action column. Question: if you click SPAM by mistake then GOOD again, will it be removed from Blacklist?

Then a last request: would it be possible to add and other "type" (not friend, not spam) with another colour?
Some companies like providers send from the same address Important informations but more often "Fanstastic Offers!!" that are very painfull.
Since I have to manage more than 10 accounts, I'd like very much to sort out this from the other mails.

All my thanks in advance.
Bernard.

I just want to send some positive feedback that the slowness (several seconds delay restoring from and minimizing to systray) was virtually eliminated for me in Mailwasher 6.0 and 6.1. Response time is much quicker now (for me anyway). Running XP SP2, P4 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM.

BTW, this quick message board is nice! However, it's rapidly becoming one extremely long page to scroll through. Like most msg boards it would be best if you: (1) display msg title only by default; (2) limit number of messages displayed per page; (3) sort by date descending (newer messages first).

Thanks Nick!

In reference to my posting MailWasher is SLOOOOoowwww on Thu, 2007-12-20 at 08:26:

I'm running WinXP SP2 and latest updates, AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600+ at 2.8 GHz with 2 GB of RAM.
Radeon 1650Pro w/driver ver 8.33.0.0
Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.13.268
AVG Anti-virus 7.5.156

MWP U/I is ungodly slow. The window zooms out but has an excruciating pause before completing redraw. Any operation in the preview pane takes an eternity... scrolling, clicking a link, waiting for a cursor change when mousing from text to link and vice versa.

Any other data to assist in pinpointing the slowness?

Submitted by chris on Mon, 2008-03-17 04:02.

It's something we are looking at, in the interim though all I can suggest is disabling the Preview Pane.

When you download your good email into your email program they will be removed next time MailWasher checks

I downloaded 6.1 yesterday & like the look of it so far. The best thing about it over the 5.1 version I had before was the ability to retore an email deleted by mistake but I cannot get this to work.

I enterd my SMTP sever & it says the message has been sent to my email address but it does not come through. I have tested it now several times & checked the settings are checked to enable restoring but it does not work?

I have just downloaded Mailwasher 6.1 and configured it to work with Pegasus. It works great except that I am annoyed by the fact that whenever I open my email client, a new message window opens which I have to cancel before looking at my emails. I don't have this problem when I open Pegasus independantly without using Mail Washer. I find this glitch so annoying that I'm ready to give up on Mail Washer. Does anyone have a fix for this? ( I'm using Windows Vista 0

Thanks,
John

If you check your Pegasus Mail shortcut and copy the Target command, then in MailWasher specify MailWasher to use this exact target command it should work

Another long time user of Mailwasher who was also so impressed I made a donation to Nick. However, since trying MWPro I have been afflicted by increasing slowness problems that others talk about. Takes about 3 minutes to load up and while doing so uses 50 to 90% of my CPU and memory usage steadily climbs to over 250,000K. Once MWP is loaded, memory usage falls back to about 22,000K and CPU 0. Also is slow to close down.

Looking for an upgrade that fixes this or a setting change I can make...? Hopefully you can resolve this, as it is the only major issue with MWP that I am aware of, but it is one that will eventually have me give up on it.

Hi,

Mailwasher 6.1 can't handle Hotmail account created recently (since the apparition of windows mail) and have difficulty to handle old Hotmail account??? I frequently have the kind of following message when checking my old hotmail account : "Could not connect to hotmail : error support 11001
Host not found (IEdsocketError)
Session was aborted"

What is the problem and will the next version of Mailwasher be able to handle new hotmail account and more adequatly old hotmail account?

Thanks for your help,

Submitted by chris on Mon, 2008-03-17 03:59.

MS are changing aspects of Hotmail, some work some don't.  Premium accounts now have POP3 access for example.

We'll look at this for the next release.

"out of range" errors, etc: I got regular 'out of range' errors all the time and other 'internal error' alerts too some time ago and sent in a 'support request'. I was asked to try changing something and the error's were history. Now they have reappeared recently about once or twice. It was over a year or two since I was told a way to fix the problem and I can't remember what I did, and can't find the saved message either (on a CD stored away no doubt).

These issues are definitely known and were easy to fix as well. I recommend giving the support staff a chance to pass along the same things I was told to try before passing judgment! It's not a major flaw in the software but an easy fix from what I remember. And after reading what some of the upgrades have included I think they had it covered in them too for a while. It seems to have resurfaced, and the fix is sure to follow (if it hasn't been posted somewhere already. I haven't really looked very hard for it yet. :)

I have a suggestion :

As far as I'm concerned , I do not download my emails everyday , and I use the quick reply or another mean to answer to the emails displayed in the window of M.W.P. that need an urgent reply.

Thus, I sometimes have 150 , 200 or even 300 mails on the server.
I read most of them trough M.W.P. , BUT... : the emails with an attachment are causing a problem , as the attachements cannot be viewed with M.W.P.

MY SUGGESTION IS :

You should ad a line on the right click menu that would allow us to download a specific mail.

Then , when there is an email with attachement , we wouldn't be forced to dowload ALL THE MAILS , in order to get that one... ! ! !

A left-click to put that email in blue , the a right-click to get the menu , and , in this menu " Download that email into my Mail Program "

I really that this would be very interesting... ! ! !

Best rgds,

PhB
