Selling the free stuff

<update>

18th March 2008 - I've been neglecting this list, but after some people commented about Google Earth scams, I've now updated, adding around 360 websites

</update>

OK, so when I started writing this, I figured....meh....30 minutes perhaps to get the details together. 3 cigarettes, 2 coffees and a whole lot of finger cramp later I'm still here, tapping away. Because of this extra effort that almost felt like actual work, I'd be keen to hear any comments also in particular if I've missed any sites relevant to this, please let me know and I'll keep the listed updated.

Here's another scam, and though it's been around for a while, I thought it was worth a mention in the blog. Also the search results for some of these websites isn’t revealing immediate information that they are obviously scams, so maybe this blog post will move up those search rankings enough to help people to be wary.

Or convince you to try SiteHound

The basic premise of these scams is that they will sell you software that is already freely available....*sigh*.....but they’ll do so under the disguise of offering technical support, perhaps offering a “lifetime” license or “Gold Package”, or worse yet, bundling some other crappy programs together so you feel like you are getting a bargain. However they have no such agreement with the actual software publisher to do this, nor do they truly intend to provide you with much more than a credit card charge.

So I hear you ask "Sweet, that sounds like a real good deal, what kind of free stuff can I pay for, and where can I find this stuff?"
Well gentle reader, it ranges from the good stuff, to the not so good stuff. It's also remarkable how much stuff is out there.
"Stuff it" you say "That's too much work!"

OK then, here's a list.

The best site to save money

The best site to save money on music, you can download more than 200 softwares with 24/7 customer support. They have it all,lot of people think that its a scam or fraud but i felt that very usefull because you get everything under one site. Not everybody are computer savy and the kind of support they provide is really amazing and easy to learn. Well i was really glad that i have found this and I dont have to pay anything more on the net. thanks

You sir, are an idiot. So

You sir, are an idiot. So much of an idiot that you either deserve to get scammed like this, or you have some involvement with this website and you are trying to pretend you are a regular person.

For any readers....the website "Anonymous" is trying to talk about is http://www.thelimewiredownload.com

Which as you can see is in the list above. This website is misleading, it's providing a service that nobody needs. If you aren't computer savvy and want help, there are free services that do so. Heck, I'd even help you with computer problems if you asked nicely.

For example, take the official and proper LimeWire website, www.limewire.com

They have a user guide, frequently asked questions, and a support forum, where you can get help from other LimeWire users.

http://www.limewire.com/support/

So no "Anonymous" the website you found isn't any good. It doesn't provide a useful service, it doesn't give you any special access or things that are useful. It's a rip off designed to trick users into thinking they are getting value for money, when they could have gotten exactly the same, but for free.

I like the fact that a guy

I like the fact that a guy is telling us about scams, that's cool I already bought into "mysoftwaredownloads.com" I bought a lofetime membership. I really don't care about that what I do care about is finding this free stuff, every time I look there is always someone wanting a membership, I need another adobe reader, where do I look?

IN GOOGLE (sorry...

IN GOOGLE (sorry... ejm..) People needs to learn that Sponsored Links are people that pays google to appear at the top. But the really good links are after them. if you search adobe reader, after the sponsored links, its the adobe`s original site.

Hi Chris, What gets me is

Hi Chris, What gets me is that ordersignup.com promises software that is not free - like Microsoft Windows XP Pro. I'm sure that's illegal and MS should be breathing down their necks like a dragon. How can they advertise that without being caught? Regards Ulric.

Ahh found this to late. My

Ahh found this to late. My mom used the internet when she was downloadin skype. She came accross http://www.software-hq.net which is one of the sites listed and paid £46 for a memebership that has links to free stuff like skype and msn which is free. I know this websites owners have no shame but i think its wrong there allowed to go on the internet without anyone standing up to them. People that are not use to the internet like the older generation often fall victim to these websites which is just no good. These websites would not be allowed this kind of business in the real world so why is it allowed in the virtual world. Somethink needs to change! Awsome work btw linkin the websites. Hopefully people will read this before they do somethink there later gonna regret.

Reference Software-Hq, it is

Reference Software-Hq, it is not only that the site is a fraud, they always overcharge your credit card by $32.85. They "bank" on the fact that you will not challenge them. With 20,000 hits a month, I think they are probably stealing quite a bit on money.

yep, I was totally duped by

yep, I was totally duped by softwareHQ, it has been a costly lesson and has cost me over $96 and my debit card, I am in the process of fileing disputes against the charges. I mistakenly believed I was purchasing a program for $19.95 but as soon as I realized that all I got was a trial version of the program I tried to cancel my card and the transaction... be warned softwareHQ is a total fraud and uses deceptive practices to lure unsuspecting people in to take their money!.

Hey...the same thing with

Hey...the same thing with Software-HQ.net just happened to a friend of mine...She went for the 19.95 thing and got 70 charged on her card HOW DOES SHE CANCEL so she doesn't keep getting charged?

Call the Credit Card

Call the Credit Card provider and speak to them.

www.adwarealert.com is scam

www.adwarealert.com is scam of ad-aware. It offers free scan but when you try to use it, it requires that you "register" which becomes buying it. Same notion regarding internet naive people. A review of it discovered that on a clean machine, it "found" 3 spyware items that were part of regular operating system.

Thanks, have added this site

Thanks, have added this site into the list.  Let's hope it can warn some folk before they make bad decisions.

I googled

I googled www.mysoftwareprovider.com after being bullshitted into the scam after thinking I had an upgraded version of Google Earth. Feel kinda stupid, but luckily I only done the one year, but still £50 pounds of my cash has gone to nothing. Another annoying thing is, I want to cancel the account and seek a refund, and when clicking on 'contact us' you have to type in numbers onscreen and enter the email address you registered with and then it JUST SO HAPPENS that it doesnt recognize the email. Ill probably cancel my card, fuck i am so pissed right now.

That sucks....50 quid is no

That sucks....50 quid is no small amount.   I assume you paid by Credit Card so you can also try calling your Credit Card provider and explain the situation to them as they may be able to intiate a Charge Back.

I also got sucked into the

I also got sucked into the mysoftwareprovider scam re google earth - lost about $60 and had to cancel my credit card. It is a very sophisticated site and set up but what really gets me is that google still list it on their search site - their security sucks.

I also fell for the Google

I also fell for the Google Earth scam and had to cancel my credit card. Google should stop showing this site - it came up second on my Google search, apparently as a paid advertiser to Google.

www.mysoftwareprovider is so

www.mysoftwareprovider is so slick. It is the only scam I have ever fallen for so hard so fast. I only did one year and hope the charge back won't cost to much. I just never thought. GoogleEarth 2008 well how cool. This is my one and only time to get sucked on the net like this. The problem is like getting hit on the head.. you don't know you been sucked until you try to log in and it doesn't work or contact the help and your email doesn't work. This site should be jerked clean off for outright fraud. If your reading this.. it is probably already too late.

As with previous comment the

As with previous comment the site mysoftwareprovider is a total rip-off. The ad says one thing and when you join most of the stuff is freeware anyway. they should be taken off the web as they are hiding under false offers and like previous I fell for it. I just hope that I can stop payment to this crowd as it has been less than 24hrs and the bank can block it.

I also fell for the same

I also fell for the same scam with Google Earth and mysoftwareprovider.com - they said it will be billed as "MYMUSICBILL.COM" on my credit card. I will call my credit card company and tell them of this scam. Can't there be some kind of class action taken against this company to convict them? I have a little bit of paper trail to hopefully contact their billing support during hours of operation at the mysoftwareprovider website, and I'll try the same technique that the guy above used to get all of his money back--we'll see how that works. Glad I found this site. Thanks for the heads up on this scam.

Yeah, I got also scammed

Yeah, I got also scammed mysoftwareprovider last evening. I noticed the dead links almost immediately and cancelled my credit card. However, Visa told me that pre-authorized payments prior to the cancellation would still go through. I was unable to download the "free" program as the webpage would not load. Probably due to me have Spybot S&D installed. Another tipoff was the webpage link. It is a mile long, and when you study it, you find that it originates in Russia. Probably the Russian mafia. If the charge still goes through I'll more forcefully address it with Visa. I never would have thought Google would support this type scam. puffy

i found out to late what can i do

we were taken in by

we were taken in by records-ib.com which was the name on the bank card account info of charges to our account.Name on website was Unlimited Search. After logging on for first time, quickly found out the site did not work at all - looking for the most basic, known info produced no results. In trying to cancel, my e-mail to them was most likely ignored. After entering record-ib.com in google to log back on, I was directed to this site where, unfortunately too late, I learned the truth. Had to cancel bank card for the bank to back the charge out. Hopefully that is the end of the charge although now I have the inconvenience of having to wait for another card. I guess that is a small price to pay for at least getting my money back.

WoW what great service... i

WoW what great service... i was about to get my lifetime membership, to one of the above mentioned sites, and i thought "let's just google it and see what's been posted'... Thanks, may others follow your lead

There is another scam (at

There is another scam (at least i think it is a scam, maybe im wrong). i downloaded the "free" AVG software to scan my computer. when it found no viruses or adware, i thought that it might actually be for real. i set it to do a nightly scan. Now there is an advertisement comes with this "free" software, about buying the full package. shortly after i downloaded this software, my puter started getting sluggish. i did a scan with the AVG. again it found no problems. finally my computer got to the point that i could not even log onto a web site of any kind. so i started doing system restores, going back a couple days at a time. Each time a system restore failed to fix the problem, i would go back a cple more days. then i did one for the day of the download of AVG. Guess what?! problem was finally fixed. i dont know if it is teh same with all AVG sites but i got mine from here .... http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition afer i fixed my puter i found this site.. i count myself lucky i did not lose any money. thank you for giving me a place to vent

Hi Stacy I've had similar

Hi Stacy I've had similar problems with AVG free since about two updates ago (probably around the time that you posted here). In my case it only made my computer slow on startup. I think it's because recent free versions have been set to do an automatic quick scan on startup. Maybe they did this to encourage people to get the paid version? Apart from that bit of inconvenience, I think AVG Free is excellent. Only one trojan has slipped by my defences in 8 years of using AVG free, and AVG "nailed" it instantly. I bought a new computer with a virus already installed (I discovered files that indicated the shop had used it for one day before selling it to me!!). As soon as I loaded AVG Free it found the virus and dealt with it. The only thing that concerns me is that the free version only does an automatic update once a day, and then only if the computer is on and connected to the interenet at that time. (A friend uses Norton and he finds that sometimes the auto update doesn't work anyway, so maybe it's not a big issue)I manually check for updates when I log on, but I do sometimes forget to. I'd recommend AVG free to anyone who has the patience to put up with the inconvenience and who will remember to manually update if their computer isn't permanently connected.

Suggest if you have problems

Suggest if you have problems such as these with American companies, you address them to the Better Business Bureau (http://us.bbb.org/). For example, only 8 complaints have been registered against software-hq in the last 3 years! (http://westflorida.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Report.aspx?site=47&bbb=0653&firm=90027880)

Hiya, thanks for list; I'd like to add the company Software HQ net which uses various website URLs, some tailored to suit programs 'sold' for example http://cs3.uk-s0ftware.com which promotes Adobe Photoshop CS3 - after you pay, the 'real' site http://www.software-hq.net/ is revealed. Here are other complaints of fraud and scam by Software HQ-net. http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/332/RipOff0332193.htm http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/software-hq-c95515.html#comments http://www.firetrust.com/en/blog/chris/selling-the-free-stuff

Thanks for providing a great

Thanks for providing a great community service, Chris. I'd give you three ciggies, make & deliver two coffees to your desk and arrange a visit from a professional finger massager, except that I don't think I could swim half way round the world to do it. I received an email from get-acrobat.com. Somehow they'd obtained my real name and used it in their email to make it extra convincing. I wasn't convinced (I'd just upgraded Acrobat)but I was about to reply via their link to complain & ask them how they obtained my personal details. I decided to do a search for the link (newemailmarket.com) first. That lead me to your site. Thanks to you I can see a reply would have been at best a waste of time, and at worst confirmed my details so they could send me more scams.
