Mailwasher will work on OS/X and LINUX ?

Accepted Friday 2nd of September 2011 9:08am | by Gast

Would be great to have Mailwasher running on OSX and/or Linux platform !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I moved home and business 100% to Linux Ubuntu years ago. MW is a brilliant application and I run it via WINE. It is reasonably OK under WINE but not perfect. A true Linux MW would be great.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
I should be nice for users owning of OS/X, Linux and Windows to have a multi platform license, exemple : you can install Mailwasher on 3 or more differents computers, so if you have a OSx, Linux and Windows computers, you can install malwasher with the same license number.

AS A PREVIOUSLY EXTREMELY HAPPY USER FOR YEARS OF MAILWASHER PRO, I CONTINUE TO WAIT FOR YOUR MAC VERSION...

"...we're writing the backend in cross platform C++ so we'll also be able to create a version for Mac's if there's enough interest." - Nick Bolton, MailWasher newsletter 21st October 2008

I switched to OSX a couple of years back and the ONLY two apps I truly miss from the bad old days are MWP and Benign. Benign is such a simple idea, it's about as beautiful as a piece of software gets. And I can verify that MWP solved my extreme SPAM problems in around two weeks.

I read the posts about Crossover (which I use) and Parallels/Fusion (the latter of which I use), but we all know that's no substitute for a native version!

Come on Firetrust, you MUST know that there's NOTHING like either of your products available from anyone else on OSX. Why are you passing up such a gilt-edged opportunity to clean up?!

Admin (Friday 2nd of September 2011 9:07am)

Good news. We're working on the Mac and Linux version. Early days yet, but we'll try and release versions as we add features. The early versions we release will be quite basic and we'll add features as we go.

Ability to use Email Account name in filter

Accepted Friday 2nd of April 2010 7:34pm | by Beermatt

Currently filters can be made using "The 'From' field", "The 'Subject' field", "The 'To' field", "The 'CC' field", "The body", "The return path" and "The entire header" as criteria. However it would be useful to have "Email Account Name" as an additional criteria to allow filters to be created for specific email accounts or groups of email accounts (without applying to all).

Enhanced reporting function

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:12pm | by Ikester

I'd like to see the ability for reporting spam, phish, etc. to specific addresses for each type such that spam would be reported to one address list, phish to another, perhaps even other lists for specific types of spam. IMO, the user should have the ability to a) create custom list titles and add whatever email addresses are appropriate, b) allow text to be tagged to the msg being forwarded so as to clarify why the msg is being reported and/or to comply with the requirements of agencies to which the report is being sent, and c) allow the user to initiate the report by means of a pulldown of list titles available via the "report" column.

Multiple spam messages in each report e-mail

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:20pm | by Stan_qaz

MWP v6.x sends one spam report per e-mail, this isn't very efficient and sending a large number of messages at one time may invoke either local or ISP based spam blocking causing your messages to be lost or have to be individually approved.

What I'd like to see is something similar to the Knujon or Spamcopper Thunderbird extensions that group multiple spam reports into a single message.

The spam messages should be inserted into the report as attachments and the total message should be less than about 50KB.

Aside from the more efficient sending of messages it reduces the number of incoming report confirmation messages from Spamcop. If you could fit 20 spam reports into a single message that would be a 20 to 1 improvement on your incoming mail too.

The Friends list enhanced to reduce spoofing

Accepted Friday 2nd of April 2010 7:34pm | by Stan_qaz

What I an currently doing to deal with friends' addresses being forged is very simple, easy to implement and over the last year or so has never been fooled. I create a filter for each friend's address when they initially have a spoofing problem and then remove them from the easily fooled friends list.

The filter is dead simple, I just copy the friends From: line from one of their headers into the filter so that not only is the address checked but the user identification they have entered into their mail client is checked. For friends that send mail from a few different programs or places I may have to enter each on its own line.

My From line data looks like this: "Stanley P. Miller"

Firetrust could add the full line checking to the existing tool with very little programming effort.

Suspend scheduled refresh

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:27pm | by MrBill

I'd like a quick and easy way to suspend the scheduled refreshing so that while I'm working my way through reviewing and acting on the messages in the grid, MW doesn't download a new batch of messages and sprinkle them all over my carefully-reviewed grid. Some sort of a toggle that changes the display enough that I can't forget I've done it, like maybe changing the "Check Mail" icon to a blinking "Suspended" icon. Another entry in the drop-down on the Check Mail icon would work for me as a way to engage the option - maybe with a check-mark toggle.

This is a possible alternative to the "Wash Reviewed" suggestion...

Admin (Friday 2nd of April 2010 8:02pm)

We don't think you'll need the suspend scheduled refresh as the new grid we're using takes much better control of itself and doesn't jump all over the place.

popup to show new messages

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:29pm | by Gast

It would be helpful to have a popup to show when new emails arrive as is commonplace in many pop3 mail seekers - I imagine that it would be quite simple to code in.

Right-click menu needs rearranging

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:30pm | by Bigdog31

When I right-click on a suspect email, a menu appears next to the pointer. The options are too close together and are prone to a mis-click that will inadvertently send legit emails to hell.

The options should be resorted and spaced further apart. The order of actions should be reset to separate blacklisting and friending.

Many are now using tiny laptops/netbooks that are difficult to use in either viewing the screen or doing precision pointing with the touchpad.

Setting to inhibit new mail pop up

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:31pm | by Johno

I fetch and process mail twice per day and repeated instances of a system tray pop-up announcing the arrival of more mail are going to irritate me, to say the least. Can we please have a setting whereby these pop-ups can be suppressed.

Display current message count and marked for deletion count

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:32pm | by Gast

I would like to see the total number of messages, either at the bottom of the screen or perhaps somewhere in the menu bar. Also useful would be show the number of messages currently marked for deletion.

Blacklisting improvements

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:36pm | by Bigdog31

Spammers often use various subdomains and TLDs to bypass general blacklisting of their alleged domain.

Blacklisting an email from @1105.whatacrock.com only works for emails that have the "@1105." but not @1106.whatacrock.com. Each new variant needs to be blacklisted, thereby cluttering the blacklist.

When I right-click on a suspect email and choose to blacklist the domain, MW should offer the option of blacklisting only 1105.whatacrock.com, or substitute the subdomain of 1105 with a wildcard so MW will catch all of them from whatacrock.com.

Also, some spammers will reuse old domains, but use alternate TLDs such substituting the .com with .net, .info, .org and/or adding a country domain.

MW should also offer the option of adding either whatacrock.com or whatacrock.* or *.whatacrock.* to catch all of the variants.

Add support for other Spam Reporting services

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:40pm | by Plevi

Having Spamcop as the only spam reporting service is already a good thing. Therefore, adding support for other services - such as KnujOn - would be a cool and an easy-to-implement improvement. Of course, KnujOn report is possible from within the spamcop user parameters, via Spamcop website . Also, the KnujOn website provides a link to a registry patch that would allow MWP to transparently report to KnujOn (at least, that's what I understood, but it's so transparent that I would need a network sniffer to be able to verify whether MWP is really reporting to KnujOn or not).
How about it?

spamcop checkbox

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 2:47pm | by Junkit

Wherever there is a checkbox for delete, it would be helpful to include a checkbox for send to spamcop. I sometimes have many emails that I send to spamcop and I have to manually check each one.

Wanted: AND / OR grouping of conditions in filters

Accepted Friday 2nd of April 2010 7:48pm | by Philip Goddard

The problem at the moment, and in the video I've seen of the new MW, is that in any filter you have to choose ALL of the conditions or ANY of them, and that is actually very limiting, necessitating quite often having to create multiple filters where one would be logical and much more efficient. What's needed is the facility to be able to group conditions in the manner of (e.g.) (aaaa AND bbbb) OR (aaaa AND cccc) / (aaaa OR bbbb) AND (cccc OR dddd) / (aaaa OR bbbb) AND cccc -- and other similar sorts of groupings. Then I could have a much tidier and more efficient filter list.

spamcop reporting

The old version of MW had the ability to send a spam email to spamcop. This version doesn't have that ability. I would like to be able to continue sending spam to spamcop.

Ability to sort friends list by real domain name

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 3:01pm | by Gast

The current sort method for the friends list is either alphabetically or by the sub-domain name. For example, sam@alpha.betically.com would sort in the a's because of the sub-domain alpha. I propose a real sort by domain which would cause the example to sort in the b's for betically.com (the true domain name).

Admin (Monday 7th of December 2009 11:24am)

You'll be able to do this in the new version

Filter option for country TLD

Accepted Wednesday 11th of November 2009 9:52am | by Bigdog31

Many spammers use foreign emails to bypass filters or to cause confusion with legit domains (yahoo.com vs. yahoo.com.jp).

MW needs a filter option that has a checklist for the hundred other TLDs for countries that would never be a source of legitimate emails. There is no reason for me to get emails from Russia, east European countries, Africa, or many Asian countries. I would simply check the list of TLDs and ban emails that contain a .po, .jp, or whatever. The list would include the full name of the country to avoid confusion: .jp - Japan.

Admin (Wednesday 11th of November 2009 9:52am)

A variation of this is in the new rewritten version

Restore regexp testing like mailwasher pro in mailwasher pro 2010

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 11:06am | by Gast

The ability to test regexp expressions in filters being created or edited has not yet been implemented in mailwasher pro 2010.
It was a great help in the old mailwasher pro. Please bring this feature back in the new version.

Return actual link display

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 11:09am | by Gast

In older versions, hovering the mouse over a lik would display the true address. This was useful in helping spot bogus links. Could this be restored, as all I see now is the option to go to the link?

'Links to' hover text box

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 11:10am | by Gast

In the original MailWasher, hovering over a link in a message popped up a 'links to' box. This was a very useful tool for determining if the link was valid, I often made a spam call from this alone, searching the source list is pretty un-intuitive.

Is it possible for the setting of the number of days that the recycle bin contents is displaye, is constant until reset to a different value? Add an export to file button for blacklist and friend list

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 11:27am | by Gast

If your system crashes and you have to reinstall the OS you have to teach mailwasher the Blacklist and friends list all over again, could we not have an Export to file button beside the Import button so we can at least save the lists and import them back in after re installing the software.

I want to be able to hide any known SPAM or known Friends (the way it used toi be in last year's version.

Accepted Thursday 7th of July 2011 11:29am | by JPMTJR

When the new 2010 version was created we were told that Firetrust was going to give us back the ability to hide Emails from known SPAM and known Friends. This is how it was in the older version (6.5.4).

I set up the Accounts/Status configuration but it leaves me wanting. Every time a new Email arrives the application reopens to review all of the Emails again. I do not care to have to view all of my Emails this is what my Email program (Outlook) is for.

Once a sender is recognized as either a Friend or a SPAMmer I feel there is no need to ever see an Email from this sender in MailWasher.

add an "select all" check box

Accepted Wednesday 26th of October 2011 9:57am | by Gast

With multiple emails hitting the inbox, it would be helpful to have a "select all" checkbox above the "delete" column. Right now I have to click each box individually, and just think it would be helpful not to have to.

I've been using Mailwasher since the 1990s, and love it! Thanks for all you do!

Sudden death lockout

Accepted Wednesday 26th of October 2011 10:01am | by Gast

You might consider modifying the current process of being locked out without any warning.

You current action creates much ill-will and animosity, followed by customer withdrawal, as noted in on-line forums; not something I would think you would want from loyal lifelong customers. If so then maybe I am with the wrong Company!

My suggestion is you have a 7 day continuous warning, renew in [countdown of days] or lockout will occur, at startup prior to renewal date and if renewal is not effected, then lockout would occur.

This will precipitate a conscious positive action by the user. If the customer does not renew then it might be advisable to at this point to ask for a withdrawal survey to be completed. You might also consider a length of time bonus for renewal; remembering that it costs a darn sight more to procure a customer than it does to retain an old one.

Note also that an unhappy customer will do your company more harm than good which again increases the cost of procurement and or decreases the number of uses, thereby affecting your bottom line.
