Mailwasher will work on OS/X and LINUX ?

Friday 28th of August 2009 2:42am

Would be great to have Mailwasher running on OSX and/or Linux platform !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I moved home and business 100% to Linux Ubuntu years ago. MW is a brilliant application and I run it via WINE. It is reasonably OK under WINE but not perfect. A true Linux MW would be great.

Hi,
I should be nice for users owning of OS/X, Linux and Windows to have a multi platform license, exemple : you can install Mailwasher on 3 or more differents computers, so if you have a OSx, Linux and Windows computers, you can install malwasher with the same license number.

AS A PREVIOUSLY EXTREMELY HAPPY USER FOR YEARS OF MAILWASHER PRO, I CONTINUE TO WAIT FOR YOUR MAC VERSION...

"...we're writing the backend in cross platform C++ so we'll also be able to create a version for Mac's if there's enough interest." - Nick Bolton, MailWasher newsletter 21st October 2008

I switched to OSX a couple of years back and the ONLY two apps I truly miss from the bad old days are MWP and Benign. Benign is such a simple idea, it's about as beautiful as a piece of software gets. And I can verify that MWP solved my extreme SPAM problems in around two weeks.

I read the posts about Crossover (which I use) and Parallels/Fusion (the latter of which I use), but we all know that's no substitute for a native version!

Come on Firetrust, you MUST know that there's NOTHING like either of your products available from anyone else on OSX. Why are you passing up such a gilt-edged opportunity to clean up?!

Good news. We're working on the Mac and Linux version. Early days yet, but we'll try and release versions as we add features. The early versions we release will be quite basic and we'll add features as we go.

I swapped from PC to Mac and the only complaint I have is that there is no Mailwasher Pro for Mac. C'mon Firetrust Mac users get spammed too!

I run Mailwasher on my Mac via "Parallels" very successfully. But it is possible to get the "Process Mail" button to jump platforms to open "Mail" on the mac.

I've been using MWP for a long while now but am on the point of converting from Windows to Ubuntu but I see there isn't a version for any Linux derivative. I'll miss the functionality of MWP. I could install MWP under Wine I suppose but a native Linux version would be preferable.

i am using mailwasher pro on my mac. this is a full mac version, not via parallels or other virtual windows app. they are supposed to be doing a new version for Mac but this has been ongoing for some time.Email firetrust and ask if they can provide a link to the app for download thats what i did when i lost my application and needed to reinstall.i dont think there are any better programs for spam on windoze or Mac as many seem to still download the spam to your machine and then delete it, Come on Firetrust lets have the new version for Mac

MWP works reasonably well in Wine on Linux. Emulate Win98 for best results. However, a native Linux version would be much preferred. Those of us looking to abandon Macrosoft need software vendors to get on board. Even through there's a lot of freeware written for Linux, the paid software model is not dead, especially for anything as useful as MWP!

Come people! I know you're working on one because I still have the alpha you sent me a while back. Pretty please? :-)

As stated by others, MWP works quite well in Wine on Linux but it is obvious when using it that it is running on the wrong OS. With the growth of Ubuntu, in particular, it is time for a Linux version. You could even try persuading Canonical to list the free version in the Ubuntu Software Centre. Personally, I would also be prepared to buy a new license for a Linux version because it would be unreasonable to consider it an upgrade.

+1 for Linux version of MWP, not through WINE. As Anonymous above says, Linux as an OS is as good if not better than Windows. What it lacks though is software and drivers. I'm still waiting for the day when I can switch over to Linux for good, not just when I'm not working, and MWP would be a major part of that decision.

They had a Linux version of MW for a while, it never got 100% ready to release. Now they are looking at making one available again once the new version is released.

I am using Ubuntu v9.10 w/Wine already installed. I tried to use MWPro (latest version) under Wine. However, every time I tried to set-up an email account I kept getting some kind of "cryptic" error. I have been able to install the "FREE" version of MW Free v6.3. The only drawback with this version is that it only allows for one email account (being a FREE version). I do have a license/key for Pro current version but as I said can't use it because of the error. I don't know if the error is with MWPro, Ubuntu, or Wine; if not a combination of the three. Maybe FireTrust will release a Linux/Unix version. Let's see.

When they announced Vista and I saw all of the horror stories, I went and bought a Mac. So far I've convinced 4 other people to dump their Windows systems and buy Macs. I'm working on a 5th person right now. I want everyone using Mailwasher. I used it years ago and now that you can use DNS black lists with it, this program is much better than ever.

Where are the Mac download links?!?!? C'mon!!

I bought MWP when it was a small shareware program, and referred a number of PC clients to it who bought the program over the years. But in 1994 I switched to a Mac for home and company use and began converting some clients too. I'd love to tell them "this (MWP for Mac) is one of the required programs you need."

Still waiting (even after I alpha-tested the Mac version several years ago, before it got dropped). With more people switching to Macs I think this is a large untapped market.

Hello there, I also use MAC ... switched from Windows to Mac as it is more stable and easy to work... but... NO MAILWASHER for Mac...? what a pitty... please think about it... you could even create an Iphone App and sell thousands of copies on the app store... everybody needs to have a mailwasher nowadays... as spamming has become a business for the phone companies and all those providers of internet connections. The more spam is running on internet... the more data is downloaded... the more you pay..! and I do not want to get robbed !!! Think about it...!

I must be one of the original users of Mailwasher, back when you had a pitcture of yourself with your cat. I have since spread the word about Mailwasher and now nearly all my friends, aquantences in UK, France and Canada use Mailwasher. The problem now is I have -along with a growing number since the disaster that is Vista- ditched the PC for OSx and a Mac. I' am trying to convince a friend to make the switch as he is also fed up with Microsoft. My only problem is that he will not switch because there is no Mailwasher for the MAC. Interesting, since I introduced him to your program in the first place. Please, please, as I see a growing chorus on your site asking, make a MAC version. Yours is the most worthwhile piece of software on the web.

I would like to add to the call for a Linux native version. I bought MWP6.1 just before I ditched MS Windows, I still have it running on my Linux system using WINE but a version the would run native in my 64bit Linux environment would be great. I would even be willing to buy it again at full price for that.

In the U.S. Apple Sales are now out numbering the sale of Windows machines. The same is starting to happen in the U.K. My friend who has a business fixing windows machines is loosing customers at the rates of three a week to Apple on average. Just switched to a Mac. Like many of you, I started using MailWasher years ago before it was sold. Among all the other things that make MailWasher so valuable, I am on dialup and need to be able to delete large emails (over 1MB) before downloading to my computer. Apple mail lets me delete them if I sit in front of my computer and watch for the notice that comes up if there's a large email, but I don't want to have to sit there and stare at the screen when I can be off somewhere else while MailWasher gets all my mail. Macs are getting more and more popular. Why is Firetrust so behind the times?

Trevor Jarvie (from Oz):

I am still using MacroS**t, despite the fact that I have both Ubuntu and Mint installed on my PC. I am also considering getting a cheap laptop which may perforce have Casements 7 firmly ensconced on it (though I have yet to price a Macbook through a local second-hand purveyor of All Things Mac in this my city of Sydney [no, not the one in Nova Scotia]). Since I stumbled across Mailwasher Free some 18 months ago, I frankly don't know what I ever did without it, and I drool at the thought of spending only USD 10 to have it for my very own! Primarily, I want to ensconce my Opera and Gmail accounts under the Mailwasher Pro umbrella. I agree with many of the comments above concerning Linux. Granted, I don't know how to use the Wine emulator, but my attempts so far have all ended in tears. I therefore would also join the chorus of those who are trying to abandon Gates' Mates for ever. The development of Mailwasher for Linux (without Wine) can't be beyond the wit of such as you! And since I am considering embracing one of the Mac platforms on a laptop, I'd like to take Mailwasher Pro with me there also. A word in support of Gmail, but, for those who don't know it. This is one of the only mail programs I'm familiar with that has a decent anti-spam filter built into it. I know that Thunderbird has always claimed something of the sort, but without Mailwasher you wouldn't believe how many busty ladies, or nudie cuties, or women in congress with animals Thunderbird merrily embraces (not to mention the manifold scams of the "Nigerian businessman [sadly deceased"]) kind.

I am gravely disappointed that the 2010 upgrade I just spent $10 on will not run in Wine and there is no Linux flavor. Installing .Net 3.5 onto my windoze XP VM and then MWP just so I can use it on my Lucid host OS is not my idea of a good time. I have been busting Nick's balls for years to come up with a native Linux flavor. He once sent me a Linux beta a long time ago but I have long since lost it. Come on, people!!! I simply want to add my weight to the many comments already posted about creating a mac friendly version of Mail Washer. I am about to go over to the 'dark side' after no less than 2 decades of using pc's. The transition is supposed to be quite smooth, but I'm discovering there are a few software developers who still think everyone loves Bill Gates and Microsoft (not the case I can assure you).
I implore you to do something about Mail Washer for mac - this would / could be a windfall for you Nick and all the other members of your team. Nick - I read in a previous post that you replied to, that you were developing a mac version in 2008 - what gives mate????
I have paid for my Windows version of MWP, but will be converting over to my Mac in the next two weeks and using it exclusively for any internet based requirements (email and browsing), so will be saying goodbye to Mail Washer forever....... A sad day, but one I will live with. Hopefully, you'll see the light too Nick and send all your supporters (for many years now) an email advising them you've finally addressed this 'little' (not) oversight!

Ive been using mailwasher from Version 4 on the pc and then Moved to Mac 3years ago
There is a Mac version available as i am using it in 10.6 (snow leopard) now but it is the version 2.0.and if you ask nicely Nick and his mates will provide you with a download link.
So why not provide this for More users but say that this is not supported currently. At least it can be used and you will then have more people that will Need the Mac version. So making this more viable to develop this.
it seems that there are many Mac users that would benefit from this being available for download and not have to use Wine / parallels /Fusion in a windows environment.I too read in a previous post that you replied to, that you were developing a mac version in 2008 Come on Nick Its been 2 years now that you said a new Mac version and still no sight of this.

Also the number of VOTES above must say something that this is a needed Program. I know the version i have works and if a new Mac version did eventually come out i would not need to purchase this but i would purchase this STRAIGHT without hesitation as it is the best Filter that does not download to your computer THEN delete the mail.

I have been using Mailwasher for around 10 years (has it been that long?) and have moved to Ubuntu Linux in the last 3 years. I have been using Mailwasher with Wine for that time, but we can't upgrade, and it is still a little flaky. I believe that Firetrust was working on, or at least looking at, a version of Mailwasher which would run on Linux.

Quote from an email received from Firetrust in July last year:
"It's not all doom and gloom however, as the core engine we've developed in the new version is portable, so the theory at least, is that we just need to write a new user interface that can build for Linux/Mac. QT is currently what we are looking at.

So it is some time off, but once things settle down the intent is to look towards a proper cross platform version that can run natively on both Linux and Macs"

Any progress on this development?

Cheers,
Alan

MWP is perhaps the only Windoze application that I miss, having migrated to Macs a few years ago. Like SO many others here who have done the same, we too get spammed on Macs and I too would be willing to pay again (assuming the price is reasonable) for a Mac version of MailWasher Pro, (which I first bought for my PC in 2003).

I too have influenced several others to move from Windows to a Mac and I am heartened to see how many folks use Macs now. MWP is a fantastic application that is just as needed on Macs and on PCs, so PLEASE let us have a Mac version SOON! (And for an iTouch/iPad, etc.).

Hope you get up and running again soon following the earthquake in Christchurch. Been there quite a few times and it's a lovely place. It's nice to see something as good as MWP come out of there (rather than the US)!

My wife has been using MailWasher 1.1.2 on a variety of Macs since 2004, it still works on OS X 10.4.11, however she just keeps nagging me about why you guys don't update it.
I know I could run it on my Linux laptop under Wine and haven't done that because it's use is not for email.
My customers are very happy with your product as well, I just upgraded one to 2011 and found out about it that way (I didn't get a mail update and the upgrade didn't warn me about a new version either -- doesn't matter now) so I have just upgraded myself as well.
MailWasher is such a good program because not only does it catch SPAM, it also gives you an idea of the social engineering associated with how spammers work. Never mind that I am also a SpamCop member so I do get an idea of further technicalities, yet with iPads/iPods and their clones coming out left and right it may be financially beneficial for Firetrust to take another look at producing MailWasher for multiple platforms, after all APIs are getting better all the time, yes?
Cheers!

Like pretty much all previous commentators, earlier this year I switched to Apple. I did not do so lightly. When I found that I could run Mailwasher Pro under Windows XP in a VMWare Fusion Window on an Apple, I was finally able to vent my frustration by ditching my Windows PC and the never ending fight with conflicting software, viruses etc, etc. I am now a very, very happy IMac owner / user; and my wife and daughter are very happy owners of Apple Macbooks. My second daughter is now proposing to buy a Macbook Pro.
I hate the never ending fight with spam and rubbish e-mails; so now the only real reason why I continue to use a Windows "Window" is to run Mailwasher - which I have been running for around 8 - 10 years now. However, I do not wish to run any Microsoft Operating System in say 12 months or so; and would dearly like, and be willing to pay for a reasonably priced Mailwasher Pro equivalent for Apple. Further, the XP Operating System that I use is expected to not be supported in around two years time; and I do not wish to further any experience with Microsoft Operating System!
Therefore, please, please develop a Mailwasher Pro equivalent for Apple!
I look forward to your positive response to all of the pleadings on this page - you will make a lot of people very, very happy if you do so!
