Selective blacklist actions

Friday 13th of November 2009 6:17am

MW is currently configured to require the user to either manually or automatically delete and/or bounce all emails from blacklisted senders.

I would rather have the option to revisit the blacklist and elect to have certain emails automatically deleted and/or bounced. This should not be a right-click option to avoid inadvertent selection.

The blacklist would be primarily listed or categorized in order of action severity:

A) automatic deletion and bounce
B) automatic deletion
C) proposed deletion & bounce held for review and manual action
D) proposed deletion held for review and manual action

Bounce messages generally don't work for the run-of -the-mill spammer, as they use forged emails that would otherwise generate bounce message errors.

However, it can be effective for individuals and legitimate organizations that might otherwise persistently send or forward crap mails. This would reduce the number of bounced bounce messages.

I'm not a bouncing fan as so many folks abuse the tool and cause problems for others but your suggestion has merit since it could help reduce the unwanted bouncing of e-mails with forged addresses. If they left out option "C" so nothing was automatically suggested for bouncing I'd think this would be a nice improvement.

I think you could something similar in v6 for now by not using the blacklist for folks you want to bounce but instead crafting a filter that would mark the bounce or even a pair of filters 0 one automatic and one that just marked the messages. That might work in the new version too.

I do miss the option for spam that it will be marked automatically for deletion and/or bouncing. Taht was very handy in the former edition, but where has this optinio gone to, and why?

I am not always sure that bouncing is a good idea because I have noticed then when I have inadvertently bounced a SPAM message, shortly afterwards the amount of SPAM I receive appears to have increased.

In v6 I could effectively 'switch off' the option to bounce. If another user on my machine uses the preview pane the bounce option always appears. Or is there a way of switching this off?
