A complaint to our governments

Here's a YouTube video from Nick in the UK.

Ravings of a lunatic or a great effort in trying to get the filth mongers politicians to take notice, I'll let you decide. I know the New Zealand Police are massively under resourced to investigate and respond to eCrime. Sure, they can do computer forensics with serious crimes such as murder and so on....but when it comes to Internet Fraud, well....let's just say I wouldn't want to be a victim in New Zealand right now.

One of our support group

One of our support group members told us some time ago about a consumer awareness (or so) show that he saw on NZ television where Maarten Kleintjes, head of the so-called NZ e-crime unit was interviewed about how consumer can stay safe on the internet when it comes to money transactions. He *suggests* that people should use Western Union when buying stuff off the Internet, and indeed, he has done this himself! This is completely out of touch with reality. Western Union is in 99,9% of the cases a deadsure sign that a scam is going on as transfers via WU can easily be made without being traced back. Western Union itself urges it's customers on their website to never use their service for business transactions. I've heard about many "misinformed" cybercrime fighting law enforcement officials but why a high-ranking police officer gives such an advice...

Probably picking himself up

Probably picking himself up a pair of counterfeit Nikes :)

My understanding is that the unit Maarten heads up is more focused on forensics, and the overall concept of eCrime, rather than the subtleties of Internet Fraud. Apparently they have helped resource Fraud Units to help deal with this, but again, my understanding is that meant sending them a PC and setting up an internet connection.

woo....criminals beware !

I don't want to come across as ragging on NZ Police about their efforts, plenty of good folk are doing the best they can with the tools and knowledge that they have. But given what I've seen and heard so far, I would say it will be another two years before the NZ Police are properly equipped and staffed to truly be a valuable service to the NZ public in relation to Internet Fraud.
